Looking for Longshots? How to Find a Price Horse

I’m always on the lookout for a longshot for several reasons. The main one: to enhance my favorite wager – the exacta – and other exotic plays.
After reading various articles by betting gurus over the years, I’ve found some pretty good advice on weeding out a price horse.
Here are some tips that just might lead to big payoffs:
*First-time starters, an unknown quantity, can lead to nifty returns if you pay attention to important factors such as key trainers and the right breeding angle if they are ignored by the betting public. A change in equipment or first-time Lasix also may signal the price is right.
*Horses that suddenly reverse form and improve no matter the reason should be considered. If a thoroughbred drops in class, most likely the horse will be bet. But if the thoroughbred steps up a bit in class, that may produce real value.

ECLIPSE Awards - Best of Thoroughbred Racing in 2005
The 35th Eclipse Awards: And the Winners Are . . .

The 2005 Eclipse Awards, which will be announced on Jan. 23 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif., are runaways in most categories.
Only the top turf male and the best 3-year-old filly, and maybe sprinting honors, appear to be a horse race.
Artie Schiller won the Breeders’ Cup Mile, defeating Leroidesanimaux by three-quarters of a length for his third victory in six starts in their only meeting of 2005.
The runner-up did capture two other Grade 1 stakes against good competition while Artie Schiller banked $1.5 million, $300,000 more. Shirocco took the BC Turf, but it was his only victory in three starts during the year, including a third and fourth in France.

Santa Anita Park's winter meet starts today, Monday Dec. 26, 2005.
The Santa Anita winter meet signals the start of this year 2005's juvenile horses starting their three year old campaigns in a week's time!
Santa Anita's 2006 winter meet promises top notch thoroughbred horse racing action ... 10 Grade I stakes races with over $12 million in stakes money during this 69th season of racing!
The pinnacle of winter meet are the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday, March 4 and the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday, April 8.
Top three year olds start their campaign on Jan. 14 at the one-mile Grade II San Rafael Stakes, to the $200,000 1 1/16-mile Santa Catalina Stakes (Gr. II) on March 4 and the $250,000 1 1/16-mile San Felipe Stakes (Gr. II) on March 18.

Gulfstream Park 2006 - Home of Florida Derby

FDR was in his second term as president, the New York Yankees won a fourth consecutive World Series and Johnstown captured the 65th Kentucky Derby when Gulfstream Park staged its first meeting.
The South Florida track has come a long way since that four-day meeting in 1939, four years after I was born. Opening day attracted 18,000 racing fans and the meeting's pari-mutuel handle totaled $441,561.

Four Breeders’ Cup Champions Defending Titles

Four horses that captured 2004 Breeders’ Cup races at Lone Star Park will defend their titles Saturday at Belmont Park.

During the previous 21 years, only five horses managed back-to-back BC victories, including two in the $1.5 Million Mile on the grass for 3-year-olds and up: Lure, 1992-93, the only winner in front at every call 13 years ago, and Da Hoss, ’97-98.
Singletary, with surprisingly high odds of 8-1 and breaking from post 9, is trying to join that elite company off an easy victory in the Oak Tree Mile at Santa Anita. Eight horses based overseas have triumphed. The 12-horse field includes Leroidesanimaux, the morning line 7-5 favorite breaking from post 11, is seeking his ninth consecutive win; Artie Schiller, 6-1 in post 2, was involved in close finishes in his last four trips; and Host, 12-1 on the rail is seven for 12 in turf outings.

Helpful Hints to Handicap the Breeders’ Cup

Here’s what to look for when handicapping Breeders’ Cup races:
$1 Million Sprint for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs: Every BC Sprint winner scored at six furlongs and posted at least one stakes victory. Eleven of 21 scored after a loss, but no winner succeeded coming into the race after an unplaced finish since Desert Stormer in ’90. No running style dominates. There have been four wire-to-wire victories, another four horses led at every call, nine turned for home in front and six closed from back of the pack.
Free Breeders Cup 2005 Picks, Odds & Tips
Most European-based runners make their dirt debut in this race and aren’t prepared for the cavalry charge. Only Sheikh Albadou, bred in Great Britain, won in ’91. In the first 47 races during the fall Belmont meeting, early speed did best from the mid-path to the outside while wire-to-wire winners were 47 percent.

Breeders Cup at Belmont Park - the Fourth Time Around

Belmont Park will host the 22nd Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Oct. 29. It will be the fourth time since 1990 that the Greatest Day in Horse Racing will be staged at the New York track.
When handicapping BC races, it’s advantageous to know how the dirt and grass surfaces are playing at the host track. Early in Belmont’s spring-summer and fall meetings, the main track usually favors speed while turf courses are much more fair.

Three-year-olds Have Inside Track to Gold Cup
